ニューヨーク公共図書館の天井画を撮影に行った。
中は、図書館というより美術館。
竣工から100年以上の歴史をもつ荘厳な趣きに圧倒される。
昂ぶりつつも冷めつつ、心地よいメンタルコンディションでカメラを手にした。
フラッシュ撮影は禁止だが、あとは自由に撮影出来て大らか。
館内を回っていると、展示室があり、写真の展示がしてあったので、入ってみた。
ドロテア・ラング、エリオット・アーウィット、アンセル・アダムス、ウォーカー・エバンス、エドワード・スタイケンなど、日本でも目にしてきた写真家達の重みあるプリントを見て、改めて「記録」という写真の力を思い知る。
最近の自分は、商業的な意味合いを写真にもたせすぎてしまっていた事に気がつく。
時間に融通がきく今だからこそ撮るものがある。

先週のニューヨークシティマラソンは、初めてマラソン大会を撮影でしたが、感じ入ることが沢山ある撮影になりました。
移動時間を考えると、一人で広域の撮影はリスクがあると思い、2か所にポイントを絞りました。
まずはクイーンズボロブリッジ。
女子トップ集団。
警備の警官とハイタッチ
警察官も一緒になって参加しているのが日本では考えられなくて、とても新鮮。
男子トップ集団
セントラルパークに移動して、沿道の人たちと同じ目線で。
フラフラになり、歩行すらままならず座り込んだランナーも、スタッフの介助を振り切り「ゴールまで走りたいんだ」と言って、立ち上がろうとしたり、見ず知らずの人が沿道から飛び出してきてハイタッチしたり、愛する人と抱き合うランナーがいたり。
参加しているランナーは皆、各々の目的のために肉体的に苦しい思いをして、精神的な充実感を味わえる。
ストレートに胸に響くシーンを沢山見ることができ、マラソンは案外見るのが面白い競技なのだと知りました。
懸命に走るランナーの姿を見て
『お前は走っているのか！？』
と問われているような気持ちになり、たるんだ腹の肉を撫で、苦笑するのが精一杯。
